The Laboratory of Nanomaterials

We work on sythesis, characterisation and sintering of bulk nanometric materials. Roughly speaking we take a nanocrystalline powder and try to make a solid piece of material out of it. We either synthesize the powders ourselves or get them from other nice people willing to share their materials with us. In rare cases we buy the nanopowders on the free market. Powder compaction happens under very high pressure. Otherwise we would have to use very high temperature which would lead to the grain growth. Under high pressure the sintering temperature is lower and the sintering time is short. We also work on structural characterization of polycrystalline nanomaterials from X-ray diffraction and, in co-operation with other research groups, investigate their basic crystallite size-dependant properties.
